This week there are new features in the YouTube mobiles, upcoming changes to Chrome that will no longer support Chrome Apps (like the Hangouts desktop app) and make third party cookies obsolete, new ways to secure your Google account and more. Plus I show you how to create a Bing Page for your personal brand or business, with free promotion of your social media posts.

- YouTube now lets you see a profile of commenters in the Android YouTube app. Just tap a commenter’s name, and you can see other comments they have posted on the same channel, their recent subscriptions, and their subscriber count, time on YouTube, and subscriber status.
- The YouTube iOS app was also updated, with the option to filter your subscription feed by “Today”, “Continue Watching”, “Unwatched”, “Live” or “Posts”.
- You can create a Bing Page for your personal brand or business, with free promotion of your social media posts (including YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest). I gave it a whirl, and while it wasn’t much of a success, it may have potential. I’ll be writing up the details this weekend.
- LinkedIn has introduced a number of new features for business Pages:live streaming, easier posting, and one step invitations to your connections to follow your Page.
- Google announced a plan to “make third party cookies obsolete”. Third party cookies allow users to be tracked across the web, and so are especially used for advertising. They are also used to keep you signed in across sites, so that you can, for example, access your Google Photos (on google.com) when creating a Blogger blog post (on blogger.com). Within two years, third party cookies will be phased out from Chrome, but the first changes will go into effect in February. Google Webmasters has an explainer and information for developers. Mozilla (Firefox) and Microsoft (Edge) will also be implementing changes.
- There were more changes on the browser front: the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser is out of preview and available to download, while Firefox-maker Mozilla laid off a number of its employees, citing the necessity to “work within the limits” of their “core finances.” In covering the recent changes, The Verge’s Dieter Bohn opined “the next browser war is here and it’s a goat rodeo”.
- If you want to learn more about using Google Search Console, check out the Google Webmasters Search Console training video series, which is rolling out now.
- Google announced a timeline for the demise of Chrome Apps. Google’s shift to Progressive Web Apps and extensions was announced in 2016, so this has been a long time coming. The Hangouts Chrome App has been showing a warning that it would be replaced by the Chrome Extension “soon” for well over a year, so again no surprise this was coming. Starting in June, most Mac, Windows, and Linux users will no longer be able to use Chrome Apps. Chromebook users can continue to use Chrome Apps until June 2021. This will not affect Extensions or mobile apps.
- It’s now easier to join Google’s Advanced Protection Program, designed to add extra security to high risk user accounts. If you are a journalist, work for a politician, are an activist, or even a high-profile gamer, consider setting it up. All you need to start is your phone.
