Move your legacy FeedBurner feeds to a Google account

If you have an old legacy FeedBurner account, you need to move your feeds to a Google account by December 31, or you will lose access to them.

FeedBurner is Google's RSS feed management service that lets you customize and promote your feeds, and send out updates to your feed by email. Blogger's "subscribe by email" service uses FeedBurner, so if you have ever enabled email subscriptions for your Blogger blog, you have a FeedBurner account.

The migration of FeedBurner accounts to Google began in 2008, and the original deadline was February 28, 2009. If you have been putting off migrating your feeds to a Google account for the past decade, now is the time to do it. If you do not move your feeds to a Google account by December 31, 2019. you will lose access to them.

If you created your FeedBurner account after that date, or long-ago moved your feeds to Google, you don't need to worry about this change. You can always check your current feeds in your FeedBurner account at feedburner.google.com.

Update January 2020 on the FeedBurner Status Blog:
Prior to FeedBurner joining Google in 2007, our service had its own user login system. In December 2019, we sent emails to users who were still using the old account system with a final notice to move feeds to a Google account by the end of the year. We have now turned off the pre-Google login system and users who did not transfer their feeds to a Google account before Jan 1, 2020 will no longer be able to access their feed settings.
You can still create new feeds with a Google account on the FeedBurner dashboard.
If you have an affected feed, you should have received an email notification from FeedBurner.
It turns out I have a long-forgotten legacy FeedBurner Feed.

The email subject line is Action Required: Don't lose access to your FeedBurner feeds
We (the FeedBurner team) have been working to upgrade our systems and have noticed that your user account is still tied to our old account system. To keep accessing your feeds you’ll need to migrate from your old account to a Google account by 2019-12-31.
The message includes your FeedBurner username, and the name and URLs of affected feeds.

Note: the original email contained a test username in error. A corrected email was sent out on November 29th, with the subject line (Corrected) Action Required: Update your FeedBurner Account.

Migrate your legacy FeedBurner feeds to FeedBurner on Google

1. Sign in to the Google account you want to use for FeedBurner

2. Open the Legacy Claim page

3. Enter your FeedBurner username

4. Enter your FeedBurner password

If you don't know the password, click the Recover your password? link, which opens
On that screen, enter your FeedBurner username or email address, then click Next.

You will then be prompted to Answer your account's Secret Question.
If you answer correctly, that should restore access to your account.

5. Enter the CAPTCHA text and click Next to continue the process.

6.  Select the Google account you want to move your feed to.
I see four options:
  • Use the Google account I'm signed into
  • Use the Google account linked to the Gmail email address I used to create the original Feedburner account
  • Select a different Google account
  • Create a new Google account.
Note: this page states:
If you plan to use AdSense for feeds, sign in to the same Google Account that you use for AdSense.
This is NOT necessary, as AdSense for Feeds ended in December 2012.

Click Next to continue the process.

8. Confirm you want to move the feed by clicking the Move feeds button.

9. You should see a screen that says Success! with more information.

Note this page links to a transfer FAQ help center article that is no longer available. You can read a copy of original FeedBurner transfer FAQ in the Internet Archive.

You will also receive an email with more information. The important details:
You may now view and manage your feed and its settings by visiting this address:https://feedburner.google.com
You will no longer be able to sign in to feedburner.com, but that's okay: from now on, there is no reason to do so. Also, your old FeedBurner feed, found at feeds.feedburner.com, will automatically redirect traffic to its new address on the feeds2.feedburner.com domain. You may still want to update any links or buttons on your website to use the new feeds2.feedburner.com address.

Your feed has been moved into this new account, and your stats have been loaded up. If you see "0" for the most recent full day, don't panic! It may take up to a week for a feed's full dose of stats to appear in your new account.
Once you have moved your feed, you can manage your feed, new post emails and subscribers in your Feedburner account (feedburner.google.com).

  1. Hi Peggy, perhaps you can help? I'm trying to migrate a feed but Feedburner is trying to migrate it to a Google account with an old, dead associated e-mail address instead of the current associated e-mail address. I can't find a way to correct this. Can you advise? Thanks!

    1. That doesn't sound right. When you go through the process, you should be offered the option to transfer the feed to the Google account you are signed into during the migration process. Are you sure the email address isn't associated with your current Google account? You can check at myaccount.google.com/email.

  2. I'm sure. I'm signed into my current email address, but it tries to migrate to my old email address and I can't find a way to update that old address with Feedburner. I can send you screen shots. 1. I'm signed in at current address. 2. It tries to transfer to old address. 3. Trouble at the mill: that address is old. 4. Google account has current address.

    1. Were these legacy FeedBurner accounts? If so, you needed to move the feeds to a Google account before December 31 to retain access to them.
If they are on a Google account, you can go through the Google Account recovery process by following these instructions: support.google.com/accounts/answer/7682439

  5. I am having the same problem as others with Feedburner grabbing an old, dead email that I stopped using 10 years ago with Google. My new email has been active with my current Google and blogger account for 5+ years, but Feedburner still aggressively links to the old email. I received no notice of the migration or changes, I'm assuming because they didn't update my email to match my Google account changes 5 years ago? Either way, I'm totally baffled.

    1. If you didn't migrate your FeedBurner account to a Google account before the end of 2019, I don't believe you still can. It sounds like you may have set up FeedBurner before a Google account was required, then didn't realize it needed to be migrated (most of those notices were many years ago).

I'm not sure what you mean when you say FeedBurner aggressively links to your old email. If you can sign in to FeedBurner, that may be something you can change.
