There are three spring events where Google announces its plans for new products and features: Google Cloud Next for cloud services, G Suite, business and education; the Google I/O developer conference, where new products, features and hardware are announced; and this week’s Google Marketing Live, which is all about ads. If you own a business, there are new opportunities for promotion. If you are a publisher or partner, this may affect your revenue. And if you’re a consumer it’s a heads up about the new ads you’ll be seeing (yay?).
But that's not all. There are new Shopping and Trips portals for your Google account, more details about getting your podcast in Search, opportunities for YouTube creators, the big tech companies signing the Christchurch Call to Action and working together against the spread of violent extremist content and much more.

- At Google Marketing Live Google presented the latest on their digital marketing products and advertising. If you are an advertiser, there are some exciting new opportunities. If you are a consumer, you’ll be seeing ads in new places. Discovery Ads will appear in the YouTube Home feed, Gmail Promotions and Social Tabs, and the Android Discover feed. Gallery Ads are a “more interactive visual format” for the Google Search results. And Showcase Shopping Ads will appear in Google Image Search results and Discover, and at some point in the future, on YouTube Partners’ videos. Google also introduced the Bumper Machine, a tool that generates 6 second bumper ads from longer videos. If you are an advertiser, see the links below for more details.
- Google also announced the new Google Shopping. You’ll have a personalized home page on the Shopping tab, where you can filter shopping results by feature and brand, watch promo videos, and read reviews. The current Google Express will be merged with Google Shopping.
- YouTube will be deprecating the display of the automatically added “Related Channels” on your channel. You can still manually add Featured Channels.
- YouTube Creator Insider took a short look at whether external links in your video description might hurt the discovery of your videos. The answer is probably not, at least not much. Be mindful of sending your viewers away from your video, but the sad truth is that most viewers don’t click the links anyway.
- If you are a YouTube Creator in the EU, EEA, UK, or Switzerland with an interest in VR video, now is the time to apply for YouTube’s VR Creator Lab (check it out). In addition to boot camp and mentoring, participants will receive a VR180 camera to keep, and $20,000 USD in funding toward the production of their dream projects. You must have at least 100,000 subscribers and a commitment to creating VR content. Applications are due May 20th.
- Google & YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, and Amazon signed up to the Christchurch Call to Action. They have agreed to a 9-point plan, which includes actions to curb the distribution of terrorist and violent extremist content. The companies will be working together to attack the root causes of extremism and hate online, develop new technologies, educate the public and develop crisis protocols.d
- Facebook is implementing a new “one strike” policy for using Facebook Live. Anyone who violates Facebook’s “most serious policies” just once will have the ability to live stream suspended, for example, for 30 days. What kind of activity would cause this penalty? The example given by Facebook is “sharing a link to a statement from a terrorist group with no context”.
- Last week Google launched the ability to listen to podcasts directly in the Search results on Android devices and Google Assistant. If you have a podcast, follow the podcast developer guide to make sure yours is eligible for this feature.
- The Android Live Transcribe automatic speech transcription is getting two new features: it will transcribe sounds, like dogs barking, clapping or music; and you will be able to copy and save transcripts. Google points out that this doesn’t only help the deaf and hard of hearing. It’s also a useful tool for those learning the language, journalists capturing interviews and students taking class notes.
- Trips is a new home for you to organize your travel plans at google.com/travel. Google will help you keep track of your trip research, saved places, hotels, flights and points of interest. If you don’t want Google to automatically compile this information, turn off private results in search or Web & App Activity in your Google account.
- For Endangered Species Day, Google is adding 13 new “anonymous animals” to Google Docs, including african wild dog, grey reef shark and cheetah. They are also working with with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Netflix's “Our Planet” to raise awareness about animals that are threatened with extinction.
- Google published new research showing how effective security measures are to prevent account hijacking. They found “an SMS code sent to a recovery phone number helped block 100% of automated bots, 96% of bulk phishing attacks, and 76% of targeted attacks”, so at the least, set a recovery phone number for your Google account.
