YouTube will start counting "Views" of long form videos and livestreams from the very first frame of the video. This matches how Shorts Views have been counted since March 2025.
Creators can find "Engaged View" metrics in Analytics Advanced Mode to see stats that use the original views metric. Engaged Views are what YouTube uses for monetization eligibility and earnings.
This likely means that public video views will increase when this change goes into effect on August 24th.
Why is YouTube making this change?
- Views in all formats will be counted the same way.
- This better matches how Views are counted on other platforms.
What is an Engaged View? The 30-Second View Myth
There's a myth that YouTube only counted views after someone watched a video for 30 seconds. YouTube, for their part, never actually disclosed how views were counted, beyond saying they counted "legitimate views." People filled the knowledge gap with assumptions.
30 seconds isn't a totally crazy number. Advertisers pay after a viewer watches at least 30 seconds of a video ad (or the entire video if it's shorter than 30 seconds). So that seems like a significant view duration.
So how does YouTube count Views (or Engaged Views under the new metrics)?
The official Creator Insider channel lays it out in Engaged Views Explained.
- A "View" will be counted if a video starts playing on the Home page or Shorts feed.
- An "Engaged View" is counted if the person continues to watch past the first frame for "some amount of seconds". The required number of seconds can vary.
- An "Engaged View" is also counted if someone clicks the thumbnail and starts to watch the video.
- "Views" are not the same as Impressions. Impressions are counted when a viewer sees your video thumbnail on the YouTube homepage, feeds, Search, Playlists and recommendations. If it doesn't start playing the video, or the viewer doesn't click, it's just an Impression.
How To See Your Channel's Engaged Views
- Click Through Rate: See what percentage of Impressions resulted in a Click on the video thumbnail.
- Average View Duration: Average minutes watched among those who stayed to watch.
- Audience Retention: See how moments held viewer attention.
A click on a video thumbnail is considered an Engaged View, as is a view where the viewer "stayed to watch".
