Hello readers!
As you probably noticed, there was no newsletter last week.
I had a serious health emergency, and recovery is going to take some time.
I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to do things going forward.
For now, there will be a briefer newsletter each week. I'm not sure when I will start live streaming again.
So that's good news, that I'm feeling good enough to write all this. But video is more logistically complicated. (And I am definitely not camera ready).
Here are the updates that will help you stay in the know!
YouTube
News
Last fall, YouTube announced a bunch of new features that would improve viewing on big screens. That included much larger video thumbnails. Now all creators can upload thumbnails up to 50 MB, up from 2 MB. Time to make sure your thumbnails are looking good.
Hollywood Reporter: YouTube Gives Political Figures and Journalists Access to AI Deepfake Detection Tool. The tool is also available to all creators in the YouTube Partner Program.
YouTube Partners
YouTube Studio mobile app update: Creators with more than one YouTube channel connected to their AdSense account will now be able to see aggregated payment activity across all channels, a breakdown of payment activity for a single channel, and payment history for the past 12 months (including a payment breakdown of taxes withheld and other adjustments).
This will only be available to users who have access to YouTube revenue data for multiple channels via a single account sign-in (either through channel permissions or brand account permissions). Learn more.
Instagram and Meta
Instagram is making creator tools available to more users. All personal accounts will have access to the Insights Dashboard, Trending Audio, and Scheduled Content. Personal accounts with at least 1,000 followers will gain access to Trial Reels, Channels, and Instagram Live. Professional accounts have additional access to Trial Reels at 200 followers, plus Monetization and Ad Tools.
Facebook has clarified its original content policy for creators. While third party content can be used as long as new content is the focus, minor low value edits will not be considered original. And those reels will be deprioritized. They have also updated their content protection tool to also detect potential impersonation.
The Edits video editing app has a new voice over teleprompter tool, freeze frame and will help you find sound effects.
What's Got Me Riled
The Digg reboot that launched in beta a few weeks ago has already shut down due to spambots. “The internet is now populated, in meaningful part, by sophisticated AI agents and automated accounts. We knew bots were part of the landscape, but we didn’t appreciate the scale, sophistication, or speed at which they’d find us.” A small team will continue to work on trying to build something different.
AI-powered grammar checker Grammarly added an Expert Review feature that would let you select an AI version of a journalist, author or academic to give you writing suggestions. They apparently didn't ask any of those writers if they wanted to participate, and they are pissed. The feature has been removed, but there's already a lawsuit.
