- You can use Google Assistant to make your days more romantic any day of the year.
- February 11 was Safer Internet Day. Social Media sites stepped up with safety and security tips:
- Google updated the “Be Internet Awesome” program for kids, highlighted how they are making a safer internet for Europe, Middle East and Africa, and provides 5 tips for keeping your account safe.
- YouTube shared how they are keeping the platform safe, especially for families, with tips on how to flag bad content, how to manage your search and watch history, control the ads you see and keep your account secure. They also recommend families use the YouTube Kids app.
- Facebook has tips for keeping your account safe, and dealing with harassment and bullying.
- Instagram has made several safety changes: You can see “Emails from Instagram” right in your account if you aren’t sure whether an email is really from them or a phishing attempt. They also have made more transparent what happens when you report content, and made it easier to appeal if your account is disabled. Read their whole post for tips on keeping your Instagram account secure and report bad content.
- Snapchat introduced “Here for You” that will provide “proactive in-app support” for users who may be experiencing an emotional or mental health crisis. That will be based on user searches for topics like bullying, anxiety, depression, grief, stress, or suicidal thoughts. They also have new Creative Tools, Filters and Lenses that promote safety and privacy.
- There are new video-level notification metrics in YouTube Analytics. Now you can see the number of bell notifications sent for your new videos, views from bell notifications, click through rate, and a breakdown of all the different notification types (including bell, email, inbox, and personalized digest). Note that YouTube may not send out a bell notification for every video you upload: if you upload more than 3 videos in 24 hours, if you publish too many videos at once, if you choose not to notify subscribers, or if you publish publicly then quickly make the video private or unlisted.
- YouTube is experimenting with smart replies for comments in YouTube Studio, just like smart replies in Gmail or Messages. I’m not sure how useful that would be, but my channel doesn’t get that many comments.
- Creator Insider has a great video explaining how videos get discovered on the YouTube Home page and suggested videos, and shows where to find more information in your Analytics.
- AdSense has posted a video with best practices for getting a new website approved for ads in your account. Check it out before you add a new site.
- Patreon will now let creators price their tiers and receive payments in Euros (€) and British Pounds (£), as well as US dollars. They are working on adding new payment methods and localization in more languages.
- Can VR improve empathy? Google and YouTube, along with the Campaign for Fair Sentencing of Youth, launched Project Witness. This is a VR experience from the viewpoint of an incarcerated children, held in solitary confinement 23 hours a day in an adult prison. Even without the VR headset, it’s disturbing.
- If you use the Gboard keyboard on your Android device, you can now mash up emojis in the “Emoji Kitchen”. For example you can combine the cowboy hat emoji with the ghost emoji to make cowboy hat ghost. Or combine the monkey and cactus emojis for a money cactus. Cute, right? It’s rolling out now. If you want to be the first to get Gboard updates, you can join the Gboard beta program.
- Google has added 1000 images to its Earth View gallery of stunning satellite imagery. Google offers the images as Android wallpapers, Chromecast and Google Home screensaver, and (using the Earth View extension) as the backdrop of new Chrome tabs. Or just view the images in the Earth View Gallery.
- You can now use Hangouts Meet in Safari 13 or later. It is currently only possible to set up a Meet video call if you have a G Suite account, but anyone can join a Meet meeting.
